Laser Hair Removal and PigmentationThe relationship between laser hair removal and pigmentation is not as black and white as it once was (no pun intended). New developments in technology have made it possible to sidestep some of the issues between laser hair removal and pigmentation. Thanks to newer lasers, people with darker skin tones are no longer beyond the scope of laser hair removal treatment. If you think of a laser as analogous to the sun, it's easy to understand the link between laser hair removal and pigmentation. Color (pigmentation) absorbs light (heat), so just as a dark shirt will absorb more heat from the sun than light colored clothing, dark skin will absorb more light from a laser than fair skin will. When this happens, the laser's heat is diffused away from the hair follicle, thus weakening the hair removal process. The Nd: YAG Addresses Laser Hair Removal and PigmentationThe Nd: YAG is one of the newer lasers that is especially effective on those with darker skin tones. It reaches the base of the hair follicle while avoiding the surface of the skin entirely. This prevents diffusion of the laser beams, making the Nd: YAG an ideal tool for darker skinned candidates. There are other types of lasers that work on all skin types, including the Ruby and the ELOS.
